How the Emperor disciplined Canadian chariots with a 50 percent tariff and heroically rescued the public interest several times before breakfast

In the glorious Imperium Americanum, there are certain things an Emperor simply cannot tolerate: weak borders, tiny numbers, disappointing trade balances, and above all, Canadian automobiles rolling south without making an appropriate financial bow before the throne.

And so Imperator Donaldus Trumpius Maximus Caesar, First Driver of the Golden Chariot, Defender of Horsepower, Guardian of the Sacred Hubcap, and Pontifex Maximus of Tariffs, once again addressed the nations:

Canada has misbehaved.

Badly.

Almost Frenchly.

Back in Julius of MMXXVI, Trumpius discovered that the northern Regnum Canadia Mapleus had deployed one of civilization's most terrifying weapons against American commerce:

A tariff system.

A tariff system!

Rome nearly collapsed.

American chariots, automobile parts, engines, transmissions, and presumably several magnificently chromed cup holders were traveling north, only to encounter what the Imperial Palace described as unfair Canadian discrimination.

Such treatment could not stand.

So Trumpius did what every magnificent emperor does when another country imposes tariffs:

He imposed bigger tariffs.

Fifty percent!

Not 10.

Not 20.

Certainly not some weak diplomatic number carefully negotiated over herbal tea.

Fifty.

A number so powerful that calculators automatically salute when displaying it.

Three Days of Great Canadian Hope

Yet Trumpius showed mercy.

In Augustus, the Emperor granted Proconsul Maple Carneyus and his northern provinces three entire days of imperial grace.

Canada had indicated that it would remove the discrimination troubling the Imperial Court.

Trumpius waited.

The Empire waited.

The customs officers waited.

Even the SUVs waited.

But then came August 21.

According to the Imperial chronicles, Canadia Mapleus abandoned its commitment, stopped negotiating in sufficiently magnificent good faith, and failed to remove the offending measures.

The Era of Niceness was officially over.

At precisely 12:01 a.m. Eastern Imperial Time on August 22, the 50 percent tariff awakened from its three-day beauty sleep.

Never before had economic vengeance been so punctual.

The Council of Extremely Senior People Speaks

Then came the Senatores Executivus Seniorissimi, carrying information, opinions, recommendations, and presumably enough binders to reinforce a medium-sized border wall.

They reported something extraordinary:

The tariffs were working.

But they might work even better if they worked differently.

And if they worked differently while continuing to work, then the working tariffs would become even more wonderfully workable.

Trumpius understood immediately.

Therefore, the Emperor decreed that the range of Canadian products subject to the mighty 50 percent additional tariff shall be modified.

Some products enter the Imperial Tariff Arena.

Others receive mercy and leave it.

Which ones?

For this, civilization has been blessed with Annex I, Part A and Part B.

Because even Caesars need appendices.

The new doctrine is wonderfully simple:

Some Canadian automotive products shall face a 50 percent additional tariff. Others shall no longer face it. And absolutely everything is being done in the public interest.

The public interest, in fact, appears so frequently throughout the proclamation that observers suspect it has been given its own office in the West Wing.

Possibly with parking.

The Sacred Scroll of Section CCCXXXVIII

Trumpius derives his magnificent authority from the ancient American scroll known as Section CCCXXXVIII of the Tariff Actus of MCMXXX.

This mighty legal parchment allows the Emperor, under specified circumstances, to impose additional duties of up to 50 percent when a foreign kingdom unfairly disadvantages American commerce.

Conveniently, 50 percent is also an extremely Trumpian number.

Forty-nine percent looks indecisive.

Fifty-one percent could cause lawyers to begin sweating.

But 50 percent?

Perfection with a percent sign.

Additional sacred texts—including Section DCIV, Section CCCXXXI, and assorted legions of federal paragraphs—stand ready to ensure that no Canadian bumper enters the Empire without proper legal supervision.

September 15: The Day of the Great Tariff Wheel

At 12:01 a.m. on September 15, 2026, the new imperial order begins.

From that glorious minute onward, certain goods from Canadia Mapleus will remain subject to the majestic 50 percent additional tariff, while others will be released from tariff captivity.

And because no tariff should ever suffer from loneliness, duties imposed under Section 232 may continue to apply as well.

This is Imperial Trade according to the Lasagna Doctrine:

One layer of tariffs.

Another layer of tariffs.

A generous sprinkling of regulatory cheese.

Then several paragraphs of legal sauce.

And finally:

Public interest on top.

Beautiful.

Possibly the most beautiful tariff lasagna ever created.

The Customs Legions March

Implementation now falls to the mighty Custodia Frontalis Americanum, known among ordinary mortals as CBP.

Together with the Imperial Treasurer, the Prefect of Commerce, the Great Trade Representative, and various other highly decorated guardians of spreadsheets, the Customs Legions may issue regulations, instructions, determinations, technical corrections, and whatever additional paperwork civilization requires.

In other words:

Trumpius speaks one sentence.

Somewhere in Washington, 84 pages of administrative guidance are born.

Previous imperial proclamations that conflict with this new proclamation shall be superseded wherever necessary.

This reflects one of the oldest principles of Imperium Trumpianum:

The newest eternal truth is always more eternal than the previous eternal truth.

And should a court invalidate one particular provision, the remaining provisions shall survive.

The proclamation therefore comes equipped with legal crumple zones.

Much like a Canadian automobile.

Only with more footnotes.

Caesar Saves the American Chariot

And thus concludes the Great Automotive Proclamation of September the Eighth, in the 251st year of American independence.

Trumpius Caesar has spoken.

Canada has been admonished.

The tariffs have been rearranged.

The annexes have been annexed.

The agencies have been commanded.

And the public interest has been served so many times that it may not require another meal until Christmas.

To the north, the maple leaf trembles.

To the south, the Imperial SUV gleams beneath the golden sun.

And across the magnificent highways of Imperium Americanum, one eternal principle of Trumpian trade policy echoes from dealership to dealership:

Free trade means everybody is free to trade—as soon as Trumpius decides how much that freedom costs.
